TINA AS A LEADER

Success for Tina lies in normalizing a more honest kind of leadership. One that doesn’t pretend to have all the answers, one which is adamantly against cancel culture, despite heightened scrutiny. One that allows the space required to cultivate psychological safety. To listen to those around us, to ask embarrassing questions, to reflect openly about our shortcomings and blindspots, to allow for the learning and unlearning that must occur in order to correct them and drive meaningful change within ourselves and our organizations. Her approach is grounded in love, aiming to influence society and inspire change through empowerment and education.

Leadership is not about having all the answers.

Great leaders epitomise emotional intelligence, integrity, candour, courage, compassion and inclusion.

The future of leadership is diverse.

When I think of a leader, I think of Ava DuVernay.

TINA ON BIAS

Tina’s career has been marked by her relentless fight against power dynamics, bias, and discrimination, especially in the tech industry. She has experienced and witnessed bias, intimidation, bullying, and incessant sexual harassment. Despite these challenges, Tina has always maintained an intense resolve to fight back and advocate for a safe, diverse, inclusive, and equitable workplace.

Tina's approach starts with creating some distance between personal stories and the broader system. She emphasizes the importance of understanding privilege and using it to help dismantle oppressive systems. For example, she acknowledges her privilege as a cisgender, light-skinned woman of color and uses it to advocate for those who face more severe oppression.

Tina encourages others to look at the system beyond their personal, short-term interests and figure out how to pay it forward. This involves supporting local initiatives, standing up for colleagues facing harassment or inequality, and actively participating in movements like Black Lives Matter. By focusing on collective ownership and transparent discussion of biases, Tina aims to create a level playing field in society and workplaces, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

TINA ON WORK-LIFE BALANCE

Recognizing the importance of mental health, Tina integrates self-care into her leadership, emphasizing the necessity to embrace one's whole self. She thinks about mental health as learning to be the station wagon pilot of all the younger versions of ourselves. We bring them all along for the ride. But if we force the bad kid into the trunk, we turn it into a monster rather than just another passenger.

When Tina acknowledges and integrates her shadows, she finds that she’s leaning into the best part of herself. She finds that her judgments are less judgemental. She finds her anger to be non-existent, even at things that would make anyone justifiably angry. To look at ourselves with wisdom and tenderness, and to change our story - that is self-care, that is healing. Undoing the residue of what we've carried to be more whole.

Tina believes that we have light and dark within us at all times and there's opportunity for redemption and for growth by showing compassion to all aspects of that pendulum.

DECISIONS, AT THE END OF THE DAY, ARE MADE FROM TWO PLACES: FEAR OR LOVE. IF YOU DO THE WORK TO UNDERSTAND WHERE YOUR CHOICES COME FROM, MAKE SURE THEY ALWAYS COME FROM LOVE.
